Getting to Cape Town

Arriving to the beautiful town of Cape Town from other parts of South Africa couldn’t be easier.

This city is extremely well connected with the other parts of the country through an extensive number of direct daily flights.

Cape Town International Airport is the second biggest airport in the country and welcomes arrivals from all over the country and from international departure points as well. Regular shuttle buses make it a simple task to get into the centre of the city upon arrival, while taxis are also easy to get hold of here.

From Johannesburg

As this is one of the world’s busiest airline routes, it is no surprise to see that there are numerous options for flying from Johannesburg to Cape Town. The travelling time is about 2 hours in total.

Early morning travellers can get started from 6am, with the day’s last flight setting off at 9pm currently. Kulula, British Airways, FlySafair, Mango and South African Airways are your choice of operators.

Around R1, 000 is a typical price on this route for a standard economy ticket on a one-way basis. However, by booking in advance you may be able to get a better price.

The option of flying from Lanseria into Cape Town with Mango or Kulula gives you an extra option for getting here from Johannesburg.

From Durban

Flights from Durban to Cape Town are also easy to get hold of, as well as being affordable. Mango, Kulula, British Airways, FlySafair, SA Express and South African Airways all run flights between these two cities.

The earliest flight leaves Durban at 6am, while the latest option at the time of writing is a 7.10pm departure. The short flight time means that you will arrive to the vibrant city of Cape Town a couple of hours after taking off.

Prices vary according to your departure date and other factors. However, if you have some flexibility or book in advance you can pick up a standard one-way ticket for less than R700.

From East London

If you plan to travel from East London to Cape Town by air then there are a few different options for you to choose from. This is because the route is operated by SA Express and FlySafair.

Airlink, South African Airways and Kulula also operate between these two airports, although they don’t offer direct flights. With these companies you need to factor an additional stop into the journey.

As for the direct flights, these take either 1 hour 40 minutes or 1 hour 50 minutes to get you to your destination. There are a few flights during the day, starting at just before 7am and finishing with the final departure at 7.50pm

Expect to pay in the region of R600. The comparatively low number of flights on this route means that booking well in advance is your smartest move.

From George

A direct flight from George to Cape Town can be arranged Airlink. There are also a number of options with stops on the way.

The direct flights take less than an hour to get to Cape Town. The first flight leaves George just after 8.30m and the last one takes off shortly after 6pm.

In terms of the cost, by booking ahead you can look for deals starting at around 1,000 Rand. Be sure to book in advance, as space is limited on this route

From Bloemfontein

Mango and SA Express are your options for a direct flight on this route. You will arrive in Cape Town around an hour and 40 minutes after setting off from the city of roses.

An 8.15am take off gives you the best way of getting in to Cape Town bright and early. On the other hand, if you want a late take off then maybe the final departure at 7pm will suit you.

The cost of a direct flight with a standard ticket on this route generally starts in the 650-700 Rand range. However, you definitely don’t want to leave it too late before booking.

From Port Elizabeth

This route is operated by the following airlines: FlySafair, British Airways and SA Express. The flight time is from 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 40 minutes.

If you like a nice early start then these flights began at 7am. For a later start, the last departure is at 7pm. As always, booking in advance is a good decision and could see you get as bargain for close to R700.
